Configuring WSUS GPO on Windows Server 2008 R2

WSUS can be pretty useful feature when properly set-up. It requires a GPO to be configured assigned to the Computers OU. If you don’t configure a GPO you’ll probably see this very sad message in your Event Viewer:

The settings are located in the following location in Group Policy Management Editor:

Computer Configuration-->Policies-->Windows Components-->Windows Update

The settings to look at are as follows:

It’s my personal experience but I always make sure that the option ‘No autostart with logged on user…’ is enabled to minimise the disruption and avoid calls saying: ‘My computer has suddenly restarted when I was in the middle of something!”

Keep in mind that before this can be configured you need to install WSUS which can downloaded free from Microsoft site.
